Setting Up the Room

Begin by setting up the room. It’s imperative to let the students know that they are being introduced to a new way of seeing the world, interacting with each other, and knowing themselves. To do this it is important to shift the seating arrangement so that everyone is in a circle or some configuration that is more conducive to a sense of equality and openness. You want the space to feel safe, and therefore you will not want an area where people from outside the class can see or hear. Experiment with ways of making the space feel more safe and supportive. You can change the lighting, get comfortable cushions, or take recommendations from the students regarding what would help them to connect to their mindfulness time.

If it is impossible to get the students in a circle, then ask them to turn their chairs toward you. If it is possible within the setting, make the mindfulness classes optional. If students don’t want to take part in the class, you can let them sit on the side without distracting anyone. Mindfulness should never feel like a punishment or something that is being pushed. If students want to be part of the group but are being rambunctious, it can be helpful to have a teacher sit next to them, giving them a tactile object to play with, or asking them what they need so as not to be distracting to others.
